Founded in 1843, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine catapulted onto the world stage with Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best’s discovery of insulin in the 1920s. In the 1950s, the implantable cardiac pacemaker was invented at the University. In recent years, the Faculty has led the way in the quest to link genes to disease, having identified genes responsible for muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, congenital blindness, Alzheimer’s disease, and the T-cell receptor function relevant to immune disease. Today, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine ranks among the top academic medical institutions in the world, whether measured in peer-reviewed publications, number of PhD candidates and post-doctoral trainees, or research funding totals. The Faculty has over 5,000 faculty members and 6,000 students, and with its hospital partners, the University of Toronto is the largest research entity in Canada, and one of the largest in North America.

Division of Teaching Laboratories
Innovative laboratory exercises designed exclusively for each Medicine Youth Summer Program module are provided by The Division of Teaching Laboratories (DTL) in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. DTL plays a vital role in the educational experience of students in various faculties at the University of Toronto by providing meaningful and enriching laboratory experiences.
Dr. Ahlia Khan- Trottier, the Director of DTL, leads a staff of approximately 15 technicians who are involved in administering numerous laboratory courses. DTL works closely with academic faculty in various departments in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine as well as other internal and external educational organizations, providing technical support, space and expertise. We strive to expose students to recent advances in research and technology by incorporating cutting edge technology into the labs and continually updating our facilities and services.
